Western Spadefoot Toad (Spea hammondii)

Status:
No federal listing status, California Department of Fish and Game Species of Special Concern, El Sobrante Covered Species.

Habitat:
Rainpools that hold water longer than theer weeks, soil characteristics of burrow refuge sites that become fairly hard and compact during the summer.

Range:
Shasta County southward into Baja California.

Threats:
Urbanization, grazing, off-road vehicle use, mining, and other activities that disturb burrowing habitat.

Population at El Sobrante:
The exact number and distribution is unknown; it is fairly common near areas that pond water.
