Mountain Lion (Felis concolor)

Status:
No federal listing status, specially protected by by legislation in California, El Sobrante Covered Species.

Habitat:
Found nearly in all habitats, except waterless regions of the Mojave and Colorado deserts that do not support deer populations. Prefers rocky, rugged terrain with dense cover, caves, and other natural cavities.

Range:
North America. In western Riverside County, mountain lions are found in the Santa Ana Mountains, San Bernardino Mountains, San Jacinto Mountains, Santa Rosa Mountains, and the adjacent brushy hills.

Threats:
Loss and fragmentation of habitat, road kills, indiscriminate shootings, loss of natural prey base (deer).

Population at El Sobrante:
The territory size of a mountain lion ranges from 15 to 35 square miles. Recently, mountain lions have been observed in the Preserve.
