San Diego Black-tailed Jackrabbit (Lepus californicus bennettii)

Status:
No federal listing status, California Department of Fish and Game Species of Special Concern, El Sobrante Covered Species.

Habitat:
Open grasslands, sparse vegetation, and agricultural areas.

Range:
The coastal side of the mountains from Mount Pinos (at the Kern-Ventura County line) south into northwestern Baja California, Mexico.

Threats:
Loss of habitat and isolation of populations due to agriculture and urbanization.

Population at El Sobrante:
The exact number and distribution of this species at the El Sobrante Preserve is unknown; it is fairly common in the Preserve.
