Stephens’ Kangaroo Rat (Dipodomys stephensi)

Status:
Federally listed as Endangered, State listed as Threatened, El Sobrante Species.

Habitat:
Sparse annual grasslands with low perennial cover, fallow agricultural fields, and sparse coastal sage scrub vegetation in areas with welldrained, sandy soils and relatively flat to gently sloped terrain.

Range:
Western Riverside County, western San Diego County, and central San Diego County are the only areas that support this species.

Threats:
Habitat loss, degradation, and fragmentation due to rapid urban development of San Diego and Riverside counties.

Population at El Sobrante:
There are approximately 404 acres of habitat that support Stephens’ Kangaroo Rat at the Preserve. The El Sobrante Preserve provides a linkage between the Lake Mathews and Stelle Mountain Preserves.
