Quino Checkerspot Butterfly (Euphydryas editha quino)

Status:
Federal Endangered species.

Habitat:
Sparse coastal sage scrub, chaparral, and grasslands, where the larval food plant dot-seed plantain grows abundantly.

Range:
Western Riverside County south to Northern Baja California.

Threats:
Habitat loss and fragmentation due to urban development, widespread use of insecticides.

Population at El Sobrante:
Currently, this species is not known to occur in the Preserve; suitable habitat is present.
