Join WM in Celebrating Earth Day

April 22,2006 marks Earth Day this year! Earth Day was started over 35 years ago to focus the nation on the impacts of air and water pollution. Much of the federal legislation that addresses air quality and water resources was developed as a result of the early Earth Day celebration.

Since that time, Earth Day celebrations have evolved into community service projects, public education forums, and increased focus on recycling and source reduction strategies in communities throughout America.

Residents and businesses are encouraged to evaluate the types of products they use and to make sure that they purchase reusable and recyclable products as much as possible. In addition to residential recycling, Waste Management offers recycling opportunities to businesses and multifamily complexes.

This year Waste Management will be organizing several different Earth Day events throughout the Inland Empire. Our goal each year is to educate as many children that we can through different activities such as our yearly bag decorating contest, essay contests, and presentations at elementary and high schools. The bag contest consists of students drawing something on a brown bag from a grocery store that shows how they can help the environment. The bags are then taken back to the store and handed out to customers on Earth Day. We are also having an essay contest at a few different schools where students are encouraged to write something about how they can increase recycling or reuse different products or materials. Winners will be selected at participating schools and the essays will be displayed on our website and at the appropriate City Hall.

By recycling, you will save valuable natural resources like trees, fuel, water, significantly reduce air and water pollution and help protect our environment. For information on how you can make a difference in saving our environment, please contact Leslie hall, Commercial Recycling Representative at (951) 280-5415 or send your questions to lhall@wm.com
