As North America’s largest recycler, we processed 5.8 million tons of commodities in 2005, saving more than 41 million trees and enough energy to power about 848,000 households.
By recycling 1.7 million tons of cardboard, we recycles more than 6.8 billion boxes each year

Ahead of the Curve:
WM Beats U.S. EPA Deadlines for Clean Diesel Fuels
We are proud to report that we surpassed the California Air Resources Board (CARB) deadline for truck retrofits by more than a year and a half, and now we’re doing the same with clean air deadlines released this month by the United States Environmental Protection Agency.
Updating the pollution controls of our truck fleet is the emissions equivalent of taking about 3,700 passenger cars off the road. The U.S. EPA announced that all refiners and fuel importers will need to cut the sulfur content of highway diesel fuel by 97 percent in California by fall 2006. And we’re ahead of the curve. All of our trucks have been exclusively using ultra low sulfur diesel fuel since November 2005. The new highway diesel engine technology mandated by the U.S. EPA will be fully implemented by 2030. We’re on track to beat this deadline, too, by more than 20 years!
Since February 2005, Waste Management has installed clean air technology on our garbage trucks throughout the Inland Empire. Almost all of our trucks have been retrofitted with either particulate matter (PM) traps or diesel oxidation catalysts (DOC). DOC’s are appropriate for older trucks while newer trucks receive PM traps. This task was completed voluntarily by Waste Management, along with a grant from the South Coast Air Quality Management District.
We believe it is crucial to do what we can to help keep noxious vehicle exhaust out of our air. Vehicle emissions are the single largest contributor to air pollution in Riverside and San Bernardino Counties – making our air unhealthy to breathe and increasing our health care costs. We believe that by surpassing the ARB deadline, our company can demonstrate our commitment to being good stewards of the environment and a clean energy leader.
These are just a few of the efforts we are engaged in for our mission of Keeping the Inland Empire Clean – read about some of our other community and environmental efforts on our Web site, at www.KeepingInlandEmpireClean.com.
