• Clean diesel technology will eliminate air pollution from 90 percent -- or about 13 million – of today's trucks and buses

  • Clean diesel engines and fuels will prevent nearly 8,300 premature deaths, along with tens of thousands of cases of bronchitis, asthma and other respiratory ailments

  • Throughout the U.S., particulate matter will be reduced by 250,000 tons, and NOx by 4 million tons every year

  • In California alone, particulate matter will be reduced by 110,000 tons, and NOx by 2.6 million tons every year.

  • Ahead of the Curve:
    WM Beats U.S. EPA Deadlines
    for Clean Diesel Fuels

We are proud to report that we surpassed the California Air Resources Board (CARB) deadline for truck retrofits by more than a year and a half, and now we’re doing the same with clean air deadlines released this month by the United States Environmental Protection Agency.

Updating the pollution controls of our truck fleet is the emissions equivalent of taking about 3,700 passenger cars off the road. The U.S. EPA announced that all refiners and fuel importers will need to cut the sulfur content of highway diesel fuel by 97 percent in California by fall 2006. And we’re ahead of the curve. All of our trucks have been exclusively using ultra low sulfur diesel fuel since November 2005. The new highway diesel engine technology mandated by the U.S. EPA will be fully implemented by 2030. We’re on track to beat this deadline, too, by more than 20 years! READ MORE >
New Law Will Ban Sharps Disposal

A new law signed by Governor Schwarzenegger on July 12, 2006 will prohibit the placement of home-generated needles and other sharps in solid waste and recycling containers. California will become one of the first states in the nation to ban sharps waste from the residential waste stream.

Although the effective date of the ban is September 1, 2008, the Legislature and Governor directed the Integrated Waste Management Board and Department of Health Services to work with local governments and private sector stakeholders to implement convenient mail-back programs and to promote their use prior to 2008. Landfill Gas-to-Energy Program

Since April 2004, the El Sobrante Landfill and recycling Center has operated three landfill gas-to-energy generators that transform methane gas into electricity and power 3,800 homes each day. Southern California Edison contracts with us to buy the energy, reducing their reliance on fossil fuels.

The gas-to-energy facility generates electricity that significantly lowers air emissions and is one of the largest and cleanest burning facilities of its kind in the world. As the landfill fills, the amount of available methane will increase, increasing the potential for more green power. READ MORE >
