We are fast approaching the end of another school year and, looking back, we are proud to share that we have had close to 1,500 students visit the landfill and wildlife preserve this year. Just between the months of April and May, we had close to 500 students learn about the workings of our landfill and about all the habitat restoration work we do at our wildlife preserve.
We helped Clara Barton Elementary School, in Corona-Norco School District, kick off their recycling campaign by putting together a recycling educational assembly for their 1,200 students. We added a competitve spirit by offerring the classes with the most successful recycling drive a pizza and ice cream party. The recycling drive helped bring in close to $500.00 to help support student activites. This is the best way to raise funds while educating students to be good environmental stewards!
In addition, we also helped 120 first-grade students from our neighborhood elementary school, Luiseño Elementary, become recycling experts. Luiseño Elementary is working hard to become a “green” school and nothing promises more success than teaching the students at a young age. The students had fun learning about recycling through a fun game of bingo. They also enjoyed meeting our falconer who helps us control the bird population at the landfill with his trained falcon. We are sure that the students are now ready to make a positive impact in their school’s environmental efforts.
Our work is not over; during the summer months, we will continue to offer our site tours. If you have kids hanging around the house and you are looking for fun things to do, please do not hesitate to contact us and we can coordinate a fun interactive educational tour.
