This year, Halloween doesn’t have to be just orange and black – with a little creativity; you can add a touch of green to the eerie holiday. With all the costumes, candy and decorations that become the next day’s trash, Halloween can be a little scary for the landfills. So this year, why not think green? Kids and parents can do things to make it a green Halloween by recycling materials to save money and create less waste in our landfills.
Here are a few tips to put a little green in your Halloween:
- Reuse and recycle old costumes: You can get bargains and inexpensive costumes from thrift stores and yard sales. These sources are inexpensive and more creative: kids can create their costumes without ruining their own clothing. Parents also can reuse and recycle their clothes by tailoring them into costumes for their kids.
- Use all of your pumpkins: Pumpkins are a favorite holiday fixture, but once carved into jack-o-lanterns, they don’t last long. To make good use of all pumpkin parts, save the seeds to bake and serve to guests, or feed them directly to birds. You also can compost the pumpkin carcass.
- Trick or treating also can be green: By walking instead of driving you avoid air emissions while also getting exercise. You also should have kids use reusable bags instead of plastic disposable ones. Also remember to use rechargeable batteries for flashlights or candles used on those dark roads.
