This fall, El Sobrante Landfill will undertake a few renovation projects to improve our on-site operations. The road to the scalehouse will be milled and repaved and the dirt road that leads to the maintenance facility will be paved. In addition, new guardrails will be placed along the concrete ditch adjacent to the road that leads to the landfill.
The site improvements will provide a safer trip to the landfill, especially under difficult weather conditions. They also will offer some environmental benefits. By maintaining the roads we reduce the miniscule dust particles that are kicked up by vehicles as they travel over dirt roads. These particles can stay up in the atmosphere for a long time and add to the air pollution in our air basin. Paving a large portion of our haul road will significantly reduce the dust that leaves our site. This will help keep our air a little cleaner.
The improvements will also allow us to reduce and manage better the silt found in storm water run-off. During a rainfall event, small particles of dirt are lifted and carried into our drainage system. These particles, if not properly contained, can travel offsite and into our neighboring properties. With a well-maintained paved road and good storm water controls such as the sediment knockout basins we have surrounding our site, we are able to virtually eliminate this risk.
